A healthy day starts with breakfast

While February is not exactly the beginning of the year, we’re all still feeling the need for a health kick.

One of the easiest ways to make your day a healthy one is to start with a breakfast that provides you with enough energy and mental stimulation for the day’s activities.

Why is breakfast so important?

  • Eating a balanced breakfast will help you to control your energy levels through the day, as you’re less likely to have an energy crash mid-morning and reach for caffeine or sugary quick fixes.
  • Controlling your energy levels by eating breakfast everyday is an easy way to keep your weight in check.
  • Breakfast provides nutrients and fuel for your body after several hours of no energy input. Your body requires vitamins and fibre throughout the day, and most breakfast foods provide these.
  • A nutritious breakfast will also put you in a positive mindset for eating well throughout the course of the day.

Tips for healthy breakfast

  • You should aim to balance your breakfast between the main food groups, to ensure that you’re including as many minerals as possible. Eating starchy foodssuch as wholegrain toast or porridge will provide your body with slow-releasing energy, and adding fruit to your breakfast instead of sugar or honey provides essential extra fibre and vitamins.
  • Dairy and non-dairy proteins such as eggs, are excellent sources of protein and calcium which your body uses to grow and repair itself.
  • Breakfast smoothies can be made by blending your favourite fruits and berries with low fat natural yoghurts - which results in a colourful, nutritious, vitamin and protein packed breakfast on the go.
